Chapter Six

As soon as Psion walked into the dining hall at two-fifteen and saw Delilah arguing with Felicia, he knew something was wrong. With how hard Tate had worked to appease him, Psion thought it only reasonable for Felicia to do the same to Delilah. Instead, the vampire held the eagle shifter’s hands in her own and shook her head, clearly refusing whatever her beloved was asking for.

“Psion, please come with me.”

An odd feeling of déjà vu filled Psion upon hearing his alpha’s voice. Turning, he searched for the speaker. Psion took in his alpha’s serious expression and tension rolled through him.

Maybe he should have gone to see Alpha Dorian first thing that morning. Instead, he’d shifted into his leopard and gone for a run. He’d finished by finding a tree to climb. He loved climbing trees. Plus, Psion had wanted time to think, to accept the changes he knew were happening in his life.

Psion had also done his fair share of fantasizing about Tate.

“Yes, Alpha,” Psion responded, crossing to him. “But I’m supposed to meet Tate here.” When Dorian opened his mouth, Psion quickly continued, saying, “He’s my mate. We met last night.”

Alpha Dorian offered him a small, yet concerned, smile. “I know,” he replied. “This is about Tate. Now, please come with me.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Psion wondered if his alpha knew something about Tate that the vampire hadn’t shared, yet. Something that was cause for concern. Immediately, he felt guilty for the thought. Tate had been nothing but sweet and kind, even super patient.

“Is something wrong?” Psion asked softly, following his alpha out of the dining hall. He realized they were headed toward the single room cabin used by Trent, a warlock and herbalist that acted as the pack’s healer. Five feet from the deck, Psion froze, unable to make his legs keep going. “What’s going on?”

Why was the alpha taking him to the warlock’s healing hut?

Then, Psion smelled it. The faint, iron tang of blood hung in the air. Wrapping his arms around his torso, he tried to stop breathing as his belly tightened. His throat clogged and he struggled against his sudden urge to throw up.

Alpha Dorian stepped into his line of sight. He cupped his jaw with both hands and tilted his head, forcing him to meet his gaze. His dark eyes held a wealth of understanding.

“You need to keep breathing,” Alpha Dorian ordered. “I know you can smell the blood, but breathe anyway. That’s your vampire’s blood you smell. Your cat likes the smell, even if it unsettles you while in human form.”

Psion bit his lip, but did as his alpha commanded... mostly because he gasped upon hearing that he smelled Tate’s blood. What had happened to his mate? How had he gotten injured?

Finding his tongue, Psion asked. “What happened to Tate?”

“Tate was injured a couple of hours ago,” Alpha Dorian replied. “Shot twice by a rogue shifter.” He removed his hands from Psion’s jaw, wrapping him in a hug. “He’s going to be all right, but I wanted you to hear it from me.
